Peskin, Pawlik, Hanrath Earn First Soccer Weekly Awards for 2018 Season

Kelso Peskin earned Offensive Player of the Week while fellow Cardinal Jocelyn Hanrath was named Goalkeeper of the Week. Courtney Pawlik of the Bearkats earned the week’s defensive accolade. Lamar (2-0-0) heads north for a two-game road swing in week two, taking on Oklahoma State on Friday at 7 p.m. CT and Oral Roberts at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Sam Houston State (1-0-1) hosts San Diego on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in its lone week two contest. Goalkeeper of the Week: Jocelyn Hanrath, Lamar – So. – Salt Lake City, UtahHanrath recorded two shutouts in her first two Division I games in net while also recording a saved penalty kick in the team’s 2-0 win over Houston. She leads the Southland in total saves (12), is second in saves per game (6) and has recorded one assist. Offensive Player of the Week: Kelso Peskin, Lamar – Sr. – Cape Town, South AfricaPeskin helped lead the Cardinals to back-to-back wins in opening weekend, scoring three goals between the 5-0 win against Grambling and 2-0 win over Houston. She scored the first goal in the 14th minute against Grambling, adding the fifth and final team goal in the 54th to complete the brace. Against Houston, she opened the scoring again with a header in the 19th minute. She is tied for first in the conference after week one with three goals to her name on only seven shots. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. Defensive Player of the Week: Courtney Pawlik, Sam Houston State – So. – Missouri City, TexasPawlik helped Sam Houston State to a 2-0 win over Utah State, making several key takeaways and serving as the Kats’ primary free kick specialist on set pieces. She led the SHSU defense and put in a full 110 minutes on the pitch at Louisiana in a 1-1 double overtime draw and registered the full 90 minutes at home against Utah State.
